OnLive Technologies Inc. is shipping server software that allows up to 75 users to communicate simultaneously on a corporate World Wide Web site.
The company rolled out its OnLive Community Server 1.0 software, enabling companies to create Web sites and allow several users to communicate in real-time, said officials at the Cupertino, Calif., company.
Officials said the software will allow corporations to reduce their long-distance charges by holding multiparty audio conferences over the Internet. Companies now can either purchase more expensive conference bridging systems or rent bridges from telecommunications providers for conference calls.
Mindscape Inc., in Novato, Calif., which is currently using the software, cited the product's scalability as an advantage.
"So far, the barrier to entry is how many of those people visiting our site have microphones," said Mark Nieker, executive vice president and general manager. "Once everyone gets microphones, that scalability becomes really important."
The software, which runs on either an Intel-based Windows NT 3.51 or a Solaris SPARC 2.4 system, allows IS managers to track users on a site and to monitor server performance and peak hours of usage.
To dial into a Web site, users must either have the OnLive Traveler or Talker client software, a Pentium-based PC, and a 14.4K-bps modem.
OnLive also announced that NEC Corp. is licensing the server software for use with its BigLobe Internet-based online service in Japan.
Server pricing varies depending on configuration. Software supporting five users is available free of charge until January; after January, the software will cost $895.
The server and client software is currently available for download from www.onlive.com.
