In a bid to move its Java technologies closer to a single international standard, Sun Microsystems Inc. today applied to the International Organization for Standardization to become a standards arbiter, company officials said.
The application to the Geneva organization's Joint Technical Committee seeks "publicly available specification" status for Sun, meaning the company would have the power to recommend or discourage the IOS' adoption of technical specifications for the use of its technology, Sun officials said.
Sun is based in Mountain View, Calif.
